Obama pledges to limit the use of drones

US President Obama has outlined plans to limit the use of US drones, saying they must be targeted against terrorists when a threat was "imminent." Responsibility for launching a drone has been transferred from the CIA to the US Department of Defence. He said:

"To say a military tactic is legal, or even effective, is not to say it is wise or moral in every instance.

SWAPped: how size, weight, and power are transforming the military electronics industry

It's ironic that one of the few growth areas in the U.S. defense industry these days involves making things smaller, but this is the world we live in. While demand for military aircraft, tanks, and ships appears to be on a steady decline, small is where it's at.

I know you're dreading it, but I'll say it anyway: SWAP (you can uncover your ears now). It's that ubiquitous term you can't escape that refers to electronic systems that are small in size, weight, and power consumption. Strange that SWAP never seems to mean electronics that are large, heavy, and use a lot of power, but I digress.

Obama addresses US military sexual assault 'scourge'

US President Barack Obama has summoned US military leaders to the White House to discuss the rising number of sexual assaults in the armed services.

Obama said he and Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel would have weekly meetings on the problem until it's under control.

Blueprints for 3D handgun take refuge in Pirate Bay

WASHINGTON - Virtual blueprints for the world's first 3D printable handgun found a safe harbour Friday at file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, dodging a US government attempt to pull them off the Internet.

Defence Distributed, a Texas nonprofit that promotes the open-source development of firearms using 3D printers, withdrew the files needed to make the single-shot Liberator at the behest of the State Department on Thursday.

Pentagon Estimates 26,000 Sexual Assaults in U.S. Military

WASHINGTON, May 08 (IPS)  - The U.S. Department of Defence is announcing that reported cases of sexual assault in the U.S. military last year rose again to 3,374, a six percent increase over 2011 and a record high.Yet the figure that is causing widespread anger here is the estimated number of unreported cases – some 26,000 incidents of rape or assault. That’s a significant rise even over last year’s estimated figure of 19,000, an astonishingly high number that constituted the first time that the U.S. military had released estimates for unreported incidents.

US Defence approves Apple's iOS devices for its networks

Devices built around Apple's iOS operating system have been approved by the U.S. Department of Defence for use on its networks, as the department moves to support multivendor mobile devices and operating systems.

The Defence Information Systems Agency (DISA), which certifies commercial technology for Defence use, said Friday it had approved the Apple iOS 6 Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG).

Obama requests 7pc funding boost for Asia-Pacific region

US President Barack Obama is planning to boost spending in Australia and other Pacific and East Asian nations as the US refocuses on the region, and away from traditional hotspots Europe and the Middle East.

The request came as Defence Minister Stephen Smith and US ambassador Jeffrey Bleich exchanged diplomatic notes on Thursday in Canberra to formally bring the Australia-US Defence Trade Treaty into effect.

3D-printed gun files removed after 100,000 downloads

Cody Wilson, the mind behind the Liberator, the world's first 3D-printed handgun, said he didn't know what would happen once he uploaded the blueprints for the gun online.

The US Department of State, through its Office of Defence Trade Controls Compliance, forced Wilson to take down the online blueprints for the Liberator and all the other 3D-printed weapon parts that he has made available online. In a letter to Wilson, the State Department argues that by uploading the files, Wilson and his company, Defence Distributed, may have run afoul of export control laws, as first reported by  Forbes.

Contractors spinning off divisions as Defense budget ax falls

Pentagon budget cuts were supposed to herald a wave of consolidation in the defense industry. Instead, they’re prompting contractors to shrink by spinning off divisions.

McLean-based Science Applications International Corp. plans to split into two companies by February, and L-3 Communications Holdings last year spun off a $1.7 billion unit that provides government services.
